Intranet comes from web technology where by information is being navigated using Internet explorer through Uniform Resource Locator (URL), e.g. www.affortech.co.ls is the URL to the website of Affortech Pty Ltd. There is Internet (World Wide Web or WWW or W3) for globally accessible information. Now there is Intranet for internal corporate information network.

The Intranet has the potential to be valuable strategic asset for the organization. It is a necessary prerequisite for a wider knowledge management strategy. It can deliver many benefits such as:

	Centralised resources of business  informationand knowledge. E.g. governance manuals and policies .
	Effective communication and news distribution infrastructure
	Decentralisation of automated processes. E.g. leave management system.
	Single interface to enterprise applications like contracts management, telephone bills, leave management system, budgeting system and EIS.
	Reduce excessive email traffic on the network caused by sharing of news, updates and documents.
	Cost effective deployment of systems since most of the resources for web systems are provided by the Internet explorer which almost every computer has.

Leave Management System on the Intranet is a good example of how Intranet can bring efficiency and integrity to the process. Those people who know how leave was administered before, will agree that there is so much to be happy with, due to the introduction of the new system. In this system every employee is an active participant. Some are branch leave administrators while others are active information navigators from their desktops.
